Chapter Sixteen

Pillow Talk

The front door was half-open when I walked up the steps; the doors were always locked at all times. Slowly, I crept into the house with my duffle bag thrown across my shoulder. All of the family cars were parked around the driveway, which meant that everyone was home waiting on me.

"Hey everybody I'm here!" I called out in the foyer. Nobody answered, which was strange since our house always had a bunch of people in and out of the house. All of the lights were dimmed until I reached the living room, where I could hear the big TV playing my brother’s favorite movie, Scarface. He swore he was Tony Montana, living off my father’s drug money and reputation. I could see his arms hanging from the chair with a bottle of vodka sitting on the table beside him. He probably came home and passed out from partying all night with his friends and some girls. Instead of bothering him, I walked past to the kitchen, where it smelled like my mother had been cooking something; I hoped it was my favorite meal, like I requested. She was sitting at the island.

"Hey Mommy, I'm home," I walked up to her from behind, hugging her from the back. Her body fell limp in my arms. Her head rolled around, facing mine. There were two gunshots in her forehead. Her eyes stared straight at me. I ran back into the living room to get my brother.

"Deuce, Mama is dead!" I screamed, grabbing him in the chair. His body fell out of the chair, revealing holes in his shirt and head, then I heard someone walk in the door behind me. The closer the footsteps got, the more I wanted to run and hide. All I could think about was the emergency guns my father kept planted all over the house; they had to be all gone since I didn't find them on my mother or my brother. The footsteps stopped at the doorway of the living room. I held my breath, ready to face whoever had decided to come back for me.

I jolted up out of my sleep in a cold sweat, breathing frantically. It was the same nightmare again that I’d been having since I was sixteen. I laid back down, trying to catch my breath. Ritchie rolled over, holding me tighter, but I pushed him away. I still wasn't over that shit he pulled at church earlier. He knew I didn't like that bitch. Not only had he been talking to her, but bringing her into our organization behind my back was beyond betrayal on his behalf. It was Chalon's family that put the hit out on my family that forever changed my life.

"We need her on board baby; for all we know, she could be right about her family not being responsible for that hit on your family all those years ago. I mean, doing business with them could be better for us than you think it would.
